Letter to the Editor

Open letter to the Vice Chancellor Nnamdi Aziikiwe University Awka

*”The white men came to Southern Nigeria with Bible in their left hand and a sword in their right hand, while they gave us the Bible, they invaded our homes, took the strongest amongst us as slaves, exchange them for a mirror and took our people to their country for hard labour”…Anonymous*

The present University authority came with prayers for the entire university with one hand and arbitrary increment of school fees on the other hand, thereby dashing the hope of the children of poor parents and those who are struggling to sponsor themselves through school.

The Biblical Joseph preserved the nation of Egypt and Israel throughout the period of seven years plenty and seven years famine and like his namesake, *Prof. Joseph Ahaneku during his tenure as Unizik Vice Chancellor ensured that the school fees payable by zikites were affordable to the children of the poor.*

Dear Vice Chancellor, I wish to draw your attention to the callous and inhuman treatment meted to the Peace loving students from the office of Bursary get Department.

*Sir, The University authority denied the increment in the tuition fee of the students.*

*How can one explain that students from the same class/level are made to pay four different amount of school fees namely #26,300, #36,300.

Dear Sir, *I wish to remind you that many students were unable to write the last semester exam due to their inability to pay the previous school fees, what will be their fate now that the school fees is doubled.*

Sir, a comparison with the fees payable by students in other geopolitical zones namely ABU Zaria, Uniben, Unibadan is no where close to the recent increment.

Sir, you will agree with me that while Chief Obafemi Awolowo gave free education to the western region, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe built the University of Nigeria so that the children of the poor can go to school.

Many of those in authority, benefited from the then government and today, they have failed to replicate it so that the children of the poor can have access to quality education.

*Sir, since, the school authority have decided to punish we the students for a no just cause by making students to pay different amount of money without any official explanation, No one can beat a child and tell him not to cry.*

*Dear Sir, I want to assure you that your government has beaten us and told us not to cry, but we shall not be quite, we shall raise our voice, our voice will not be drowned. We shall stand up now that it matters most, we shall draw the attention of the world to the callous and inhumane treatment which the university authority has meted out to us the students.*

*I wish to appeal to you to direct the University Bursary Department to rectify whatever wrong that has occurred as this has the capacity to cause students restiveness and unrest in our University of all times.*

*Aluta Conitnua, Victoria Ascerta.*

Signed

*Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu (De Peoples Advocate).*
