Dangote Refinery Debunks Fuel Import Allegations; Reaffirms Commitment to Euro-Standard Quality

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals (DPRP) has officially refuted recent claims suggesting the company imports finished petroleum products. The refinery described the allegations as false, misleading, and based on a fundamental misunderstanding of global refining operations.

During a media briefing held at the facility on February 5, 2026, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, David Bird, clarified that while the refinery processes intermediate feedstocks—a standard global industry practice—it does not import finished fuel for sale.

Key Clarifications on Operations

  • The Merchant Model: DPRP operates on an advanced European and Asian merchant refinery model. This involves integrating refining, blending, and trading systems to meet modern environmental and quality benchmarks.
  • Intermediate vs. Finished Products: The refinery utilizes intermediate materials (such as Naphtha, VGO, Reformate, and Alkylate) as feedstocks to be further refined into premium petrol, diesel, and petrochemicals.
  • Market Readiness: Mr. Bird emphasized that semi-finished fuels are never released into the Nigerian market as they are unsuitable for vehicles. Only fully refined, market-ready products leave the facility.

Commitment to Global Standards

The refinery highlighted that its products are engineered to protect public health and engine longevity:

    • Gasoline: Lead-free and MMT-free with 50 ppm sulphur.
    • Diesel: Meets Ultra-Low Sulphur (ULSD) specifications.
    • Exports: The quality of Dangote products has allowed the refinery to successfully export to competitive international markets.

“It is unfortunate that misleading narratives are being spread about a refinery that has transformed West Africa from a dumping ground for substandard fuels into a hub for high-quality products,” Bird stated.

Economic Impact and Transparency

Beyond fuel quality, the refinery noted its significant role in stabilizing the Naira, reducing foreign exchange pressure, and ending chronic fuel scarcity in Nigeria.

Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Brand and Communications Officer of Dangote Industries Limited, urged the media to use precise technical terminology to avoid misinforming the public or creating unnecessary market panic. He reaffirmed the refinery’s commitment to total transparency with regulators and the Nigerian people.
