…Gives Governor Sani 2-Week Ultimatum
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
Retirees in Kaduna State have issued a two-week ultimatum to the state government to settle their outstanding gratuities and pensions, which have been unpaid for eight years, or face a potential shutdown.
The retirees, expressing their deep frustration, highlighted the severe hardship they have endured since retirement, including numerous deaths and widespread suffering due to the lack of financial support. The Union called on Governor Uba Sani to act swiftly to prevent further pain and loss of life among pensioners.
Prof. Danjuma Net, Chairman of the Kaduna State Retirees Association, made the plea during a peaceful protest at the Kaduna State Government House on Tuesday. He condemned the government’s neglect of pensioners, emphasizing the dire situation many retirees face.
“We are giving two weeks; if there’s no progress, we’re talking about real progress,” Net said. “Our people are dying in large numbers, unable to pay hospital bills. Many are homeless and struggling to survive. The governor has seen one of our members who is mentally unwell and offered help, but must we all be mentally ill before they act?”
The chairman made it clear that if there was no positive response within two weeks, retirees would escalate their protest. “I’m speaking honestly, not just as a professor, but also as a bishop—if nothing is done in the next two weeks, I’ll bring my bed and sleep here,” he warned.
In response to the protesters, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammed, spoke on behalf of the governor. He thanked the retirees for their peaceful demonstration and assured them that their grievances would be conveyed to Governor Uba Sani.
“We are committed to submitting your letter and demands to His Excellency,” CP Muhammed stated. “We believe that the governor, being the people’s leader, will listen to your concerns and take action. Please give him time to address your issues.”
The protesters carried placards with messages such as “We reject 25%, we want our full gratuities and pensions,” “Is it a crime to serve our dear state Kaduna?” and “Please pay us our pension and gratuity,” among others.
