At a two-day training workshop organized by the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists Bauchi for its members, Comrade Mohammed Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state on Media and Publicity, Thursday, tasked media practitioners on adhering to media ethics.
Gidado who represented the state Commissioner of information, Alhaji Usman Shehu Usman as guest speaker, reminded newsmen to uphold accuracy and credibility in their reportage.
According to him, it is the responsibility of Journalists to uphold accuracy, credibility, and ethical reporting amidst the digital revolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI).
During the training session with the theme: Emerging Trends in Journalism: The impact on modern Journalism, Practitioners, at the Yankari game reserve, Comrade Gidado noted that the initiative came at a crucial time when journalism is undergoing rapid transformation globally.
The special Adviser who observed that the media is driven by emerging trends in technology, media consumption, and public expectations.
He pointed out that through the use of AI, media landscape is shifting dramatically and traditional media is evolving, digital platforms are redefining storytelling.
“Artificial intelligence is becoming a tool in newsrooms. These changes present both opportunities and challenges for journalists and media practitioners”, he said.
Comrade Gidado said one of the most significant shifts in journalism these days is the rise of digital media, saying news is no longer confined to newspapers, radio, and television; social media, blogs, and independent platforms now play a critical role in shaping public discourse.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way news is gathered, analyzed, and disseminated. Al-powered tools can generate reports, analyze trends, and even predict breaking news patterns”, Comrade Gidado said.
“However, while all can enhance efficiency, it cannot replace the core values of journalism-human judgment, investigative skills, and ethical considerations”, the media Aide further noted.
He called on Journalists to adapt to AI by integrating all, while maintaining the essence of responsible reporting.
He said despite technological advancements, the need for investigative journalism remains as critical as ever, especially in an era where misinformation can go viral within minutes.
He urged journalists to be more vigilant in verifying facts, cross-checking sources, and holding powers to account.
Mukhtar Gidado who appreciated the working relationship between the Bauchi government and members of the correspondents Chapel, commended Journalists in the state for doing their job responsibly.
The special adviser encouraged newsmen to embrace innovation while ensuring that integrity remains at the heart of their profession.
