The move, according to a Non-governmental organization known as Child is Gold Foundation, is to promote menstrual health and hygiene among female students.

The development followed a public hearing conducted on the establishment of Pad Banks in primary and secondary schools in Bauchi State on Wednesday.

“In a groundbreaking step towards promoting menstrual health and hygiene, Child Is Gold Foundation and ASHH Foundation, with sponsorship from Women for Women International under the CSSF funding, have spearheaded a movement advocating for the establishment of Pad Banks in primary and secondary schools, as well as in communities across Bauchi State”, the Executive Director of Child is Gold, Barrister Elizabeth George said.

She explained that the initiative has gained significant momentum through a series of strategic advocacy visits to relevant ministries and the ongoing push for a policy framework that addresses menstrual health management.

According to her, the proposed policy bill has successfully passed its first and second reading in the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

While describing the initiative as a crucial milestone in the legislative process, the Executive Director said, in order to ensure inclusivity and transparency, a public hearing was held on Wednesday, 26th February 2025 to facilitate that process.

She stated that the public hearing brought together key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), pressure groups, traditional leaders, religious leaders and representatives from relevant ministries, Departments and agencies.

Elizabeth said that the session provided a platform for robust discussions as the legal consultant, Barr. Gambo Yakubu Wakili, presented the policy draft.

She added that the public hearing witnessed thoughtful contributions, constructive feedback, and critical reviews from participants, reflecting a collective commitment to shaping a comprehensive policy that not only guarantees access to menstrual products but also fosters awareness, education, and the eradication of stigma surrounding menstruation.

She further noted that the initiative represents more than just a policy push but a movement advocating for dignity, health, and equal opportunities for young girls and women in Bauchi State.

Barrister Elizabeth added that Child Is Gold Foundation, ASHH Foundation and other partners in the movement building remain resolute in their pursuit for a sustainable solution to menstrual poverty, calling on all stakeholders to support the passage and implementation of the policy for the benefit of future generations.

On his part, the Chairman House Committee on health, Bauchi state assembly, Hon Lawan Dauda who presided over the public hearing, commended the efforts of the civil society organizations for coming up with the initiative, promising the assembly’s commitment to ensuring that the bill see the light of the day.
