ARCON announces Emmanuel Agu as ASP chairman

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has announced the appointment of a seasoned marketing professional, Dr Emmanuel Agu, as the Chairman of the Advertising Standards Panel, a body established by Section 53 of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) Act No. 23 of 2022.

ASP is charged with the responsibility of ensuring advertisements conform with the prevailing laws of Nigeria, as well as the Code of ethics of the advertising professions.

The Head of Corporate Affairs, ARCON, Winifred Akpan, in a statement on Thursday, explained that with the appointment, Agu will be taking over from the erstwhile Chairman of the Panel, Mrs Omowunmi Owodunni, who has been at the helm of affairs since 2022.

A PhD holder in Marketing, with specialisation in Marketing Communication, from Babcock University, Ilishan Remo Ogun State, Agu also has a M.Sc in Media & Marketing Communications from Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), an MBA in Marketing Management from Lagos State University, and a B.Tech (Hons) in Agricultural Economics & Extension from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), in Imo State.

The new ASP Chairman started his career as Senior Brand Manager with Guinness Nigeria Plc, in 2006, later joined Nigerian Breweries Plc in 2013, as a Marketing Manager, before moving on to JOTNA Group Limited (The LaCasera Company, Lagos, in 2018, as Group Marketing Director.

As an experienced marketing leader, Agu has a proven record of directing and managing known brands like Mainstream Lager (Goldsberg, Life Beer, “33” Export & More Lager); Stout (Legend, Extra Stout, Turbo King & Williams); La Casera Apple Drink, Smoov Chapman, Bold Franchise and a host of others.

With this vast experience in the nation’s marketing space, Agu is expected to better position the ASP in the drive to uphold the ethics and standards of the Council and advertising industry in general.

Other stakeholders that will have one representative, each, on the board of the Panel are: Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BoN), Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), Media Independent Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria Lottery Commission, and Nigeria Press Council.
