NAFDAC seizes tramadol, antibiotics, other OTC medications worth N50m from drug hawkers

As part of its efforts at protecting consumers against illicit pharmaceuticals while ensuring the well-being of Nigerians, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disclosed its operatives seized illegal drugs worth about N50 million from street hawkers in Lagos recently.

The West African country’s health regulatory agency, in a statement, said its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate made the seizures during a recent a targeted raid on drug hawkers operating in the Apapa area and its surroundings in Lagos State.

The statement also noted the raid was part of ongoing efforts at combating the distribution and sale of unauthorised pharmaceuticals.

The health regulator equally said that numerous hawkers were apprehended during the operation, and the officials confiscated a wide range of illicit drugs, including aphrodisiacs, narcotic substances (including tramadol), antibiotics, and over-the-counter medications.

Meanwhile, NAFDAC has stated the arrested illegal drugs suspects would be prosecuted accordingly, and the confiscated drugs are slated for destruction.
