In furtherance to its humanitarian services and ensuring that the world becomes a better place, the rotary club of Lagos has donated ten boreholes to Cocker community in Ifo local government, Ogun State.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the project yesterday in Ogun State, the President, Rotary Club of Lagos, Rotarian Joseph Aihigbe welcomed participants to the epoch making event and specifically appreciated Jennifer Westholt, Adesuwa Hand In Hand Hope Foundation and Markus Loehndorf, Rotary Club Oberhausen Antony-Huette, and their global partners for making the project a reality.
The much elated president further disclosed that, they got a global grant which was meant for an identified project which in this case Adesuwa helped them to identify one and the rest is history today.
“the boreholes are suppose to last for more than two decades and we expect the community leaders to ensure that the boreholes are properly maintained to achieve its intents and purposes.” He added.
Also speaking at the event, Jennifer Westholt of Adesuwa Hand In Hand Hope Foundation disclosed that,
Adesuwa is about education and helping families grow, we help the less previlage and ensure they send their children to school on the long term.
According to her, “we also do projects that improve lives of the families. For example, we asked nurses and doctors to come to the villagers to conduct free medical checkup on families. Also, we do sensitization on hygiene to families in villages among many other things.”
Explaining the reason for the location of the project, she disclosed that, it started some years ago when we started educational project here, because we find out that many kids were not going to school, and when we started sending them to school we discovered that some of them were not going to school regularly due to illnesses caused by contaminated water.
“that’s when we started purifying the water, and at a point we realized that we needed a long term solution for the family, that’s why in 2018, we come to a decision that we need boreholes for the communities around Coker here in Ogun state so that every family will benefit from clean water.” He noted.
Representing the governor of Ogun State, the special advocer to the governor on water resources, Engineer Adekunle Otun thanked rotary International and their partners for the humanitarian gesture for putting the infrastructure in place.
When I heard of the initiative, he continued, I said of course, this is one of the things the governor would want for his people knowing the fact that, government alone cannot provide all the infrastructures needed for the well being of its people, noting that, whoever the government is always ready and happy for such initiative.
While speaking on the sustainability plan of the boreholes, he stressed that, he has discussed with rotary International on how to train community members on how to operate and maintain the infrastructure to ensure sustainability which they have done.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the district governor of rotary club district 9110, Rotarian Omotunde Lawson thanked all their partners for sinking ten boreholes around Coker and expressed optimism that, people in the community will enjoy the boreholes and admonished them to maintain the boreholes for the sake of sustainability.
