World Sight Day: Lions Club Give Back to the Society

In commemoration of this year’s World Sight Day, Lion Club District 404B2 Nigeria organised a free eye screening and surgeries for members of the larger society.

Speaking on this development recently in Lagos, the District Governor, District 404B2 Nigeria, Lion Kayode Oshinuga said; “October is a whole world wide month of service for sight in the Lion club international calendar.”

According to him, “by World Health Organisation (WHO) calendar, October 24th this year, is the World Sight Day. Our activities to commemorate the day includes free eye screening no matter the number of people that are coming, free eye glasses, and we will be referring some people for surgery at our own cost.

While speaking on how they will raise funds for the surgeries and other activities, he disclosed that, they raise funds through public spirited individuals, corporate and none corporate organisations, noting that they put the money together and use it to benefit the masses.

He also noted that, Lion Club has an eye hospital in Sango Otta and Isolo where they will be referring some people to for surgery. He however, added that, “we are doing this not only in Lagos State, but in Iwo, Osun State, Ekiti and Kwara State respectively.

In his dessage to other organisations, he said there are so many voluntary organisations, even though Lion club is the biggest and most impactful, our message is together in our own little way, let us continue to contribute to the course of humanity and make this world a better place.

Also speaking, the District Committee Chairperson on Vision & Virtually Impaired persons, Lion Sandra McCollins said: “I’m honored to be given the opportunity to serve, noting that, over 1,000 people were screened and twenty were booked for cataract surgery while over 500 glasses and hundreds of eyedrops were given.”

According to her, “on behalf of the District World Sight Day and Vision Committee, I wish to sincerely thank and appreciate our able, amiable and dependable District Governor Lion Ishaq Kayode Oshinuga PMJF, NLCF and all our wonderful lions Leaders for their selfless and unquantifiable support and physical presence in making this year’s World Sight Day activities accross various axis in our great District very seamless and hugely successful.”

“the leadersship skills brought to my team is bringing together and coordinating the activities of key service providers and stakeholders to better serve the community in an effective manner with respect to health related issues.” She added.

On her advice to government, she disclosed that, “my advice to government on health related issues like this is for them to set aside a day every month, to assist people with issues with their eyes and can’t readily afford treatment. I’ll also advise them to employ more optometrists in government/ public hospitals to assist in cushioning the rising ocular cases encountered daily.”
