Olumide Set To Give Back To The Society

It takes a kind hearted person to remember his source. Volunteering one’s time to support a cause his passionate about is something such a person will never regret. It will enrich his life, familiarize him with his community, and connect him to people and ideas that will positively impact his perspective for the rest of his life.

It is a known fact that, donating your time to support those around you is extremely beneficial, both for you and your community. It is statistically proven that people who volunteer regularly are healthier both physically and mentally. Individuals who have volunteered throughout their lifetime typically live longer and have better psychological well-being. In addition to the health benefits, volunteering gives people a sense of purpose. The fulfilling feeling of giving back and contributing to society is unparalleled.

Giving back is also a great way to get to know your community and its citizens. When you volunteer, you have the opportunity to meet lots of new people. Working alongside individuals who also care about improving their surroundings will allow you to broaden your network of friends. Additionally, it will help you to better understand the circumstances of other members of your community. Having a broad, open-minded perspective of the different walks of life around you will help you to be an effective and empathetic citizen.

To this end, there are several Nigerians who have benefited from a society during their formative stage and are presently doing greatly in their endeavors but never look back at their source. While such people exist, example abound of people who have given back to their source.

For instance, Biodun Shobanjo, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria at a time donated a building complex to the mass communication department of the University of Lagos, a gesture showing appreciation to an institution that contributed to his success story in life.

Understanding this truth, Olumide Laniyan, a young Nigeria who left Nigeria for London for almost a decade ago returned home to give back to the primary school that impacted knowledge in him from cradle.

The Rockstar Educator, who visited Grace Children School, located in Gbagada, Lagos State recently expressed appreciation to his teachers who made him who is today. In particular, he spent quality time with Mr. Ibe, his primary 6 teacher who still remind Olumide of the Values inculcated in him by his teachers while at Grace Children School, Gbagada.

In what appears to like a reunion, he met with the head of alumni relations of the school, Sope Edun and promised to do his best by way of giving back to the school. He pledged that he will be taking the pupils on civic education and life skills, a process that will be carried out virtually because the school has what it takes to do that.

According to him, “it is important for pupils to know from tender age how things work, most of them don’t just know anything about it. Its what I have learnt and, I am also presently teaching in the UK. Most of us in this clime put money first, instead of acquiring the skills first and money will follow later.

For Olumide, teaching is a passion. This is bcause he has come to realize that people must find a way to help the society and make it a better place. His believe is, after acquiring great skills and knowledge, it is important to use them for others’ benefit, not for money alone.

While admonishing other people in a previledge position to the same thing, he said; “a doctor might see a couple of patients for free or give a talk at a local community center. What could you do with your skill set? Are there others you can teach or help directly? Is there something you are uniquely positioned to do? Any one can find a way to use their skills to help others directly, and by so doing, the world would be a better place.”

“without volunteers, many of the services and events we enjoy in our communities would not be so readily available. Spending time helping out at local shelters or food banks provides an important service to less fortunate neighbors. Giving back to the place you call home helps to unite the community and bridge some of the social, economic and political gaps.” He added

For him, no matter who you are, being an altruist, and helping others will enhance your life and create new opportunities for connection, self-efficacy, and confidence. People who volunteer or help others feel more in control of their lives. They feel that they are making a difference, and that is something that any individual can appreciate.

On his part, his elder brother, Mr. Gbolahan Laniyan who also passed out from Grace Children School and who trained the World’s best student named Abdulmalik M. at World Maths Day, giving back to the society is critical to growth and development.

He was responsible for leading Team Nigeria and now he is appointed to lead Team Nigeria and Team Africa for the Counting Bee. The U.S Counting Bee is coming up April 28th and students in Arizona and all over U.S are preparing for the local, national and international.

Fatima O as well the 2020 Counting Bee champion as well stresses Nigerian students to begin early preparation for our nation. We need to equip our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics urgently
