Huawei remains the firm to beat in terms products Type Approval amongst all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and digital products distribution franchises operating in Nigeria, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Recalls that the NCC is empowered by the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 to establish and enforce standards for all telecommunications equipment in operation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure that they operate seamlessly and safely within the Nigerian telecommunications environment.
Accordingly, to ensure maximum interoperability and affordability for consumers, the Type Approval standards set by the Commission are based on international standards from; The International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) and its International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR), The European Committee for Electro-technical Standardization (CENELEC)and The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
Nigeria is an associate member of IEC through the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and could become an associate member of CENELEC and ETSI.
A comprehensive list of all mobile handsets and related devices that have been tested and found to meet the applicable Type Approval standards required to allow them to be sold to consumers and operated in the Federal Republic of Nigeria can be seen at the Commission’s website.
Additional checks at NCC website revealed that aside Huawei products which are leading the list in terms of numbers, closely followed in order of numbers include Blackberry, Infinix, Alcatel, Tecno and others whose products may have disappeared in the market due to stiff market share competition. In all NCC have about 1,492 entries.
